Classic Mini Clubman & 1275GT Fresh-Air System Installation Guide
Share
The fresh-air ventilation system fitted to the Classic Mini Clubman and 1275GT is simple in principle, but complete original systems are increasingly difficult to find. Intake scoops, seals, flexible ducting and the under-wing supports are commonly missing, damaged or deteriorated after decades of use.
This guide explains how the original Clubman/1275GT fresh-air arrangement works, identifies the key original component references, and provides a practical installation sequence for the IPNG Automotive complete fresh-air vent kit (IP-0022) and its separately available components.
Important: ventilation and heater arrangements can vary slightly by model year and vehicle specification. Before removing anything, compare the existing installation on your car with the components supplied and photograph the original routing where possible.
How the original Clubman and 1275GT fresh-air system works
The system uses separate left- and right-hand intake paths. On the right-hand side, the fresh-air intake nozzle sits in the inner-wing/front-panel area, seals against the body and feeds a flexible hose towards the heater/distribution-box arrangement. On the left-hand side, the intake nozzle and seal feed a separate hose towards the left-hand face-level vent.
Both hoses are supported beneath the front-wing/inner-wing area. These supports are important: leaving flexible ducting unsupported can allow it to sag, rub against surrounding components or become crushed.
Original part numbers to IPNG replacements
The table below is intended as a restoration and identification cross-reference. Original manufacturer numbers are shown for identification purposes only. IPNG products are aftermarket replacement or reproduction components and are not supplied by the original vehicle manufacturer.
| Original reference | Original component | IPNG replacement / solution | IPNG part no. |
|---|---|---|---|
| CZH674 | Right-hand fresh-air intake nozzle / scoop | Right-hand fresh-air intake scoop | IP-0011 |
| CZH704 | Left-hand fresh-air intake nozzle / scoop | Left-hand fresh-air intake scoop | IP-0012 |
| CZH682 | Right-hand nozzle-to-inner-wing seal | Fresh-air intake scoop gasket pair | IP-0024 |
| CZH711 | Left-hand nozzle seal | Fresh-air intake scoop gasket pair | IP-0024 |
| EAM7437 | Right-hand intake-to-distribution-box hose | Right-hand fresh-air hose supplied in complete kit | Included in IP-0022 |
| EAM8472 | Left-hand intake-to-LH-vent hose | Left-hand fresh-air hose supplied in complete kit | Included in IP-0022 |
| CZH632 | Right-hand hose support to inner wing | Right-hand fresh-air vent pipe clamp | IP-0016 |
| ALA6299 / JCG10001 | Left-hand hose-to-body support (original / later reference) | Left-hand fresh-air vent pipe clamp | IP-0015 |
For a vehicle missing most or all of the original system, the IP-0022 complete fresh-air vent kit brings together both intake scoops, both sealing gaskets, left- and right-hand ducting, the right-hand heater junction-box adaptor, under-arch supports and fixings.
Before installation
Installation difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Estimated time: approximately 1–2 hours for a complete system
Working time will vary depending on the condition of the vehicle, whether the original system is still present and how much access is available around the inner wings.
Typical tools and preparation
- Basic hand tools suitable for removing any existing clips or fixings
- Trim or plastic removal tools where useful
- Cleaning cloths and a suitable mild cleaner for the sealing surfaces
- Good lighting for the inner-wing and under-wing areas
- Suitable lifting equipment and axle stands if additional wheel-arch access is required
If the vehicle must be raised, support it correctly on suitable stands on a firm, level surface. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Installation procedure
1. Inspect the existing system
Before dismantling anything, inspect both sides of the car. Identify any surviving intake nozzles, seals, hoses, body supports and heater/distribution-box connections. Photographing the existing routing can be extremely useful when restoring a partly complete vehicle.
2. Remove damaged or deteriorated components
Remove old ducting, broken supports and damaged intake components as required. Avoid forcing fragile original body fittings or heater components. Once removed, clean the intake openings and the surrounding inner-wing sealing surfaces so the new gaskets can sit flat.
3. Identify the left- and right-hand parts
The Clubman/1275GT intake scoops are handed and should not be swapped from side to side. Lay out the left-hand scoop (IP-0012), right-hand scoop (IP-0011), hoses, seals and supports before installation.
4. Fit the intake sealing gaskets
Fit the flexible sealing gasket between each intake scoop and the inner-wing/body aperture, replicating the original arrangement. The IP-0024 gasket pair replaces the left- and right-hand seals and is suitable for use with both IPNG reproduction scoops and original Clubman intake components.
5. Install the intake scoops
Position each scoop in its corresponding original intake location and install it using the original-style push-fit mounting arrangement. Check that the gasket remains correctly seated and is not folded or displaced as the scoop is fitted.
6. Route the right-hand fresh-air hose
Route the right-hand duct from the RH intake towards the heater/distribution-box arrangement, following the original path as closely as the vehicle allows. The right-hand hose supplied in IP-0022 incorporates the heater junction-box adaptor designed to connect into the original-style junction location.
Keep the ducting free from tight bends or crushing. A smooth route helps preserve the hose cross-section and reduces the chance of the duct contacting surrounding components.
7. Route the left-hand fresh-air hose
Route the left-hand duct from the LH intake towards the left-hand face-level vent arrangement. Again, follow the original body route and avoid sharp bends, twists or unnecessary compression of the flexible hose.
8. Fit the under-wing hose supports
The original system supports both fresh-air hoses against the body beneath the wing/inner-wing area rather than allowing them to hang unsupported.
For the IP-0015 left-hand clamp, secure the clamp to the vehicle first and then snap-fit the vent pipe into position. For the IP-0016 right-hand clamp, secure the support first and install the hose so it hooks into the clamp from underneath, following the original support principle.
9. Check clearance and hose routing
Before completing the installation, inspect the full length of both ducts. Confirm that neither hose is crushed, kinked or rubbing against sharp edges. Where the hose passes through the under-wing area, make sure it is securely supported and clear of tyres, suspension components and anything else that moves through the steering or suspension travel.
10. Final inspection and airflow check
Check that both exterior intake scoops are fully seated, both gaskets remain correctly positioned and all duct connections are secure. Operate the ventilation/heater controls and confirm that the fresh-air paths are functioning as expected for the vehicle's particular heater and vent configuration.
Common installation mistakes to avoid
- Swapping left- and right-hand scoops: the intake components are handed.
- Omitting the body seals: the original system used separate seals between the intake nozzles and body.
- Over-bending the ducting: tight bends can reduce the hose cross-section and restrict airflow.
- Leaving hoses unsupported: the under-wing supports are part of the original system layout and help keep the ducting safely positioned.
- Assuming every Clubman is identical: heater/distribution arrangements can vary with age and specification, so compare the vehicle in front of you before final connection.
