VW Polo Mk2F 86C Heater Blower Motor Installation Guide

The VW Polo Mk2F heater blower motor is now more than three decades old, and ageing units can become noisy, squeal or stop working altogether. This guide covers installation of the IPNG VW Polo Mk2F / 86C heater blower motor replacement kit for 1990–1994 models.

The conversion retains the vehicle's original heater assembly while replacing the ageing blower motor with the new uprated motor supplied in the kit. Installation requires drilling and cutting the original plastic heater blower assembly, so read the complete guide before starting and use the supplied cutting guide as the reference for any permanent modification.

What the Conversion Changes

The IPNG kit is designed to replace the original ageing heater blower motor while allowing the original Volkswagen heater assembly to be retained.

The conversion kit includes a three-piece motor mount, motor-to-fan adaptors, new uprated heater motor, live and earth wiring, three assembly screws, cutting guide, new heater-core foam and detailed installation instructions.

Tools Required

  • 10mm or slightly larger drill bit
  • Hacksaw
  • Knife or another suitable method of cutting thin plastic

Before You Start

  • Allow approximately 2–4 hours for the installation.
  • The vehicle's original heater assembly is required and is not supplied with the conversion kit.
  • Do not drill or cut the heater housing until you have checked the supplied cutting guide and printable PDF.
  • The original heater outer casing, fan, heater core and resistor are reused and are not included with the kit.
  • Work carefully around the vehicle's electrical system and isolate it appropriately before disconnecting or modifying wiring.

Installation Overview

1. Remove and Access the Original Heater Assembly

Gain access to the vehicle's original heater assembly and remove it as required for the conversion. Keep the original casing, fan, heater core and resistor, as these components are required for the finished installation.

2. Disassemble the Blower Section

Carefully separate the heater blower assembly as required to access the original motor and fan. Keep track of the original component positions so the assembly can be rebuilt correctly.

3. Check the Cutting Guide Before Modifying the Housing

The conversion requires minor modification to the original plastic heater blower assembly. Position and check the supplied cutting guide before making any permanent changes.

Do not estimate the cut positions. Use the supplied cutting guide and PDF as the reference before drilling or cutting.

4. Drill and Cut the Required Areas

Use the specified 10mm or slightly larger drill bit together with a suitable method of cutting thin plastic. Work carefully and remove only the material identified by the supplied cutting guide.

5. Install the New Motor Mount and Adaptors

Fit the supplied three-piece motor mount and motor-to-fan adaptors so the new uprated heater motor can be installed into the original heater assembly.

6. Install and Wire the Replacement Motor

Install the supplied replacement motor and connect the live and earth wiring. Make sure the wiring is secure, correctly routed and kept clear of the fan and other moving components.

7. Fit the New Heater-Core Foam

Fit the new heater-core foam supplied with the conversion while the heater assembly is apart, following the supplied instructions for its final position.

8. Check the Blower Before Final Reassembly

Before fully closing the heater assembly, check that the fan can rotate freely without contacting the housing, wiring or adaptor components. Confirm the motor mount, hardware and electrical connections are secure.

9. Reassemble and Refit the Original Heater Assembly

Reassemble the heater housing and refit the original heater assembly to the vehicle. Make sure the wiring is safely routed and the retained original components are correctly positioned.

10. Test the Heater Blower

Once installation is complete, test the blower operation and listen for any rubbing, contact or abnormal noise before considering the job complete.

This conversion is not a complete replacement heater box. The following original Polo components are required and are not included:

  • Original heater outer casing
  • Original fan
  • Original heater core
  • Original resistor
