The IPNG Automotive Classic Mini LED rear light conversion kit (IP-0047) upgrades the indicator, brake and tail-light functions while retaining the car’s original rear lamp housings and lenses. It is designed for 1967–1975 Classic Mini Mk2 and Mk3 saloons, including Roundnose and Clubman models fitted with rear lamp units that do not incorporate reverse lights.
The LED boards are supplied pre-assembled with labelled wiring, Lucas connectors and earth terminals. Installation uses the existing lamp housings, wiring connections and fixing studs, with no cutting, drilling or permanent alteration to the vehicle wiring loom.

What the Conversion Changes
The conversion replaces the original bulb-contact arrangement inside each rear lamp with an LED board. The exterior lamp housing and lens remain in place, preserving the familiar appearance of the Classic Mini rear lights while changing the internal light source.
Each board provides the same three functions as the original non-reversing lamp arrangement:
- Tail light
- Brake light
- Direction indicator
The supplied galvanised steel lens dividers separate the lamp sections and retain the LED boards in the original housings.
What Is Included
- 1 × pair of LED rear light boards, pre-installed with Lucas connectors and earth terminals
- 1 × pair of new galvanised steel lens dividers
The original lamp housings, lenses, lens screws and vehicle wiring are required and are not included. An LED-compatible indicator relay may also be required and is sold separately.
Vehicle Fitment
IP-0047 is intended for 1967–1975 Classic Mini Mk2 and Mk3 saloons using the earlier rear light units without integrated reverse lights. This includes compatible Roundnose and Clubman saloon applications.
This kit is not intended for later rear lamp units incorporating reverse lights. Confirm the lamp type fitted to the vehicle before ordering or beginning installation. Cars modified during their lifetime should be identified by the actual lamp housing and wiring arrangement rather than registration year alone.
Before Installation
- Switch off the ignition and all exterior lighting.
- Check that both original lamp housings and lenses are serviceable.
- Inspect the lens seals, fixing studs and wiring for corrosion or damage.
- Confirm that the existing lamp units do not incorporate reverse lights.
- Read the labels on the LED-board wiring before disconnecting the original contacts.
Do not install the conversion over damaged wiring, heavily corroded terminals or an unreliable earth connection. Repair those faults first so the completed installation has secure electrical connections.
Classic Mini LED Rear Light Installation
1. Remove the rear lamp lenses
Remove the lens-retaining screws from one rear lamp and carefully lift the lens away from the housing. Support the lens and seal as they are removed, particularly if the seals have become brittle with age.
Inspect the inside of the housing for moisture, corrosion or loose debris. Clean the housing as required without damaging the original wiring or fixing points.
2. Remove the original bulb contacts
Remove the original bulb contacts and associated internal components from the lamp housing. The IPNG board replaces these contacts, but the original housing and exterior lens are retained.
Keep the removed original parts together if you want to retain the option of returning the lamp to its previous configuration later.
3. Feed the LED-board wiring through the housing
Pass the labelled wiring and pre-installed connectors through the original rear opening in the lamp housing. Make sure the wires are not twisted, trapped against a sharp edge or positioned where the lens or divider could pinch them during assembly.
4. Position the LED board
Slide the LED board into the original lamp housing with the LEDs facing the lens. Check that it is correctly seated and aligned with the indicator, brake and tail-light sections before fitting the divider.
Do not force the board into position. If it does not sit correctly, remove it and check the housing for displaced wiring, debris or damage.
5. Fit the galvanised steel lens divider
Install the supplied galvanised steel lens divider in place of the original divider. The new divider separates the lamp functions and secures the LED board within the housing.
Check that the divider is fully seated, the board remains correctly positioned and no wire is trapped between the divider and housing.
6. Connect the labelled wiring
Connect the pre-installed Lucas terminals to the corresponding vehicle circuits, following the function labels supplied with the LED board. Connect the earth terminal securely to the original earth or fixing stud.
Classic Mini wiring may have been repaired or altered during the vehicle’s life, so do not rely on wire colour alone where the loom no longer appears original. Trace or test any uncertain circuit before making the connection.
No cutting or permanent alteration of the vehicle wiring loom should be required for the stated application.
7. Refit the lens
Check that the lens seal is correctly positioned, then refit the original lens and retaining screws. Tighten the screws evenly and only enough to secure the lens; overtightening can damage an older lens or distort the seal.
8. Repeat on the opposite side
Repeat the same process for the second rear lamp, checking the board orientation, divider position, wiring connections and earth point before refitting the lens.
9. Test every lighting function
After both sides are assembled, test the complete rear-light operation:
- Switch on the side lights and confirm both tail lights illuminate.
- Apply the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights illuminate.
- Operate the left and right indicators and confirm the correct side flashes.
- Check that the earth connections remain secure and that no function causes another section to illuminate incorrectly.
If possible, have another person operate the controls while you inspect both lamps from behind the vehicle.
Do I Need an LED Flasher Relay?
LED indicators draw less electrical current than conventional bulbs. Depending on the relay and wiring fitted to the vehicle, the indicators may flash too quickly, fail to flash correctly or behave inconsistently after the LED conversion.
If this occurs, fit the IPNG Classic Mini 12V two-pin LED indicator flasher relay (IP-0048). Confirm that the vehicle uses a compatible two-pin relay arrangement before installation.
The LED relay is not included with IP-0047 and is available separately.
Final Installation Checklist
- Both LED boards are correctly seated inside the original housings.
- Both galvanised steel dividers are fully installed.
- No wiring is trapped beneath a divider or lens.
- Lucas connectors are fully engaged.
- Earth terminals are secure on clean original fixing or earth points.
- Both tail lights operate correctly.
- Both brake lights operate correctly.
- Left and right indicators operate on the correct sides.
- Lens seals are correctly seated and retaining screws are secure.
- The indicator flash rate is normal.
Common Installation Problems
Indicator flashing too quickly
This normally indicates that the existing flasher relay is not suitable for the lower current draw of the LED indicators. A compatible LED flasher relay may be required.
One or more functions do not illuminate
Recheck the labelled Lucas connections, the relevant vehicle circuit and the earth terminal. A poor earth or an existing wiring fault can prevent correct operation even when the LED board is serviceable.
More than one section illuminates incorrectly
Check the function connections and earth point. Do not assume that the vehicle’s wire colours remain original if the rear loom has previously been repaired or modified.
The board or divider will not seat correctly
Remove the components and check for trapped wiring, remnants of the original contacts, debris or damage inside the housing. Do not force the lens into place over a board or divider that is not correctly seated.
Moisture inside the lamp
Inspect the original lens and seal before final assembly. The conversion reuses these parts, so an existing sealing fault should be corrected separately.

Does the kit include new rear light housings or lenses?
No. IP-0047 reuses the vehicle’s existing rear lamp housings and lenses.
Does the kit fit rear lights with reverse lamps?
