Honda Civic Type R EP3 facelift headlight air intake duct

Honda Civic EP3 & EP2 Headlight Duct Fitting Guide

Fitting a headlight air intake duct to a facelift Honda Civic Type R EP3 creates a direct route for cool outside air towards the intake system and is a popular modification on track-focused cars. This guide covers installation of the IPNG Automotive EP3 facelift left-hand headlamp air intake scoop (IP-0049), including headlight removal, lens separation, template positioning, progressive cutting, trial fitting, bonding and resealing.

The same process also applies to the IPNG Automotive EP2 facelift right-hand headlamp air intake scoop (IP-0050). The main difference is the side of the car: the EP3 scoop is fitted to the left-hand headlight, while the EP2 version is fitted to the right-hand headlight.

Important: this conversion requires permanent modification of the original headlight. The original sidelight module occupies the area used by the duct and must be removed, so sidelight functionality will be lost on the modified headlight.

Tools & Materials Required

  • Basic hand tools for bumper and headlight removal
  • Trim-clip removal tool
  • Screwdrivers and socket set
  • Masking tape and marker pen
  • Rotary cutting tool/Dremel with suitable cutting and finishing attachments
  • Heat gun
  • Protective gloves and eye protection
  • Suitable automotive bonding adhesive
  • Suitable automotive/headlight sealant
  • Supplied IPNG cutting template

Allow extra time if this is your first time opening or modifying a headlight. Work slowly and repeatedly trial-fit the duct before removing more material.

Important Safety Information

Wear eye protection whenever cutting or grinding the headlight. Plastic dust and small particles are produced during trimming, so work in a well-ventilated area and thoroughly clean the headlight before final assembly.

When heating the lamp to separate the lens, use controlled heat and work progressively around the perimeter. Excessive heat can distort the clear lens or housing.

The modification is intended for track-focused use. Because the sidelight module is removed during installation, it is the installer's responsibility to ensure the finished vehicle remains suitable and legal for its intended use.

Step 1 – Prepare the Vehicle

Park the car on level ground and allow the engine and surrounding components to cool. Disconnect the battery before unplugging the headlight wiring. Protect surrounding painted surfaces around the bumper and front wings where required.

Step 2 – Remove the Front Bumper

The front bumper needs to be removed to gain proper access to the headlight assembly.

  1. Remove the upper bumper fixings.
  2. Remove the wheel-arch fixings and lower fixings.
  3. Carefully release the bumper from each side of the vehicle.
  4. Check for any wiring or remaining attachments before pulling the bumper fully away.
  5. Place the bumper on a clean, protected surface.

Step 3 – Remove the Headlight

For the EP3 Type R, remove the left-hand headlight. For the EP2, remove the right-hand headlight.

Disconnect the electrical connectors, remove the headlight mounting bolts and carefully lift the complete assembly from the car. Place it on a clean, soft work surface and remove any bulbs, rubber covers or other removable parts that could be affected by heat or cutting debris.

Step 4 – Separate the Headlight Lens

The clear outer lens must be separated from the main headlight housing before the duct can be fitted. Gradually warm the joint around the perimeter using a heat gun, moving continuously rather than concentrating heat in one area.

As the sealant softens, carefully release the retaining clips and begin separating the lens from the housing. A plastic trim tool can help start the joint. Continue heating and opening small sections until the clear lens can be removed.

Do not force the lens while the sealant is still hard. Apply more controlled heat instead.

Step 5 – Remove the Sidelight Module

The headlight duct occupies the area used by the original sidelight module. Remove the sidelight module and the associated internal components from the area being modified.

This module is not refitted. Once the conversion is complete, the sidelight on the modified headlight will no longer function.

Step 6 – Position the Supplied Cutting Template

Clean the area where the duct will sit and place the supplied IPNG cutting template onto the headlight lens in the specified position. Check the orientation carefully before marking or cutting.

Masking tape can be applied around the working area to protect the lens and provide a clearer surface for marking. Trace the required opening, then offer the scoop up to the headlight once more to confirm the position.

Measure and check twice before making the first cut.

Position the supplied template carefully before marking the lens. This image shows the intended template location on the facelift EP3 headlight.

Step 7 – Make the Initial Lens Cut

Using a rotary tool with a suitable cutting attachment, carefully make the initial opening. Do not cut directly to the final edge at the first attempt.

Leave a small amount of additional material, then use a sanding drum, file or finishing attachment to gradually bring the opening to its final shape. Offer the IPNG scoop into position repeatedly as you work.

The goal is a neat, controlled opening that allows the duct to sit correctly without removing unnecessary material.

Step 8 – Progressively Modify the Internal Headlight

Once the scoop passes correctly through the outer lens, the internal headlight structure must also be trimmed to provide clearance.

Position the scoop and identify the exact areas preventing it from reaching its final position. Remove a small amount of material at a time, then trial-fit again. Continue this process until the duct sits correctly.

Do not attempt to estimate the entire internal cut and remove everything in one go. Progressive trimming gives much more control and reduces the risk of removing material that should remain.

Step 9 – Complete a Full Trial Fit and Check Rear Alignment

Before applying any adhesive, assemble the lens, duct and main headlight housing together. Check that the scoop follows the front of the lamp correctly and that the rear 80mm outlet sits in the intended position with suitable clearance.

The lens must return fully to its original position against the housing without the duct placing the assembly under tension. If anything prevents the lamp from seating naturally, separate the parts again and remove only the additional material required.

Step 10 – Clean the Headlight Thoroughly

Once all cutting is complete, remove all plastic dust and debris from the headlight. Pay particular attention to internal surfaces, as contamination becomes difficult to remove after resealing.

Avoid touching reflective internal surfaces or the inside of the clear lens unnecessarily. The bonding surfaces must be clean and dry before adhesive is applied.

Step 11 – Bond the Headlight Scoop into Position

Place the IPNG scoop in its final position and apply a suitable automotive bonding adhesive to secure it to the lens. Keep the duct correctly aligned while the adhesive cures.

Tape or another appropriate temporary support can be used to prevent movement. Follow the curing instructions supplied with your chosen adhesive and do not reinstall the lamp before the bond has developed sufficient strength.

Step 12 – Seal Around the Rear of the Scoop

Once the duct is secure, carefully seal around the rear of the modified area. Cutting the headlight creates additional potential routes for water and moisture to enter the lamp, so this step is important.

Apply suitable automotive sealant around the rear of the scoop and any modified areas where moisture could enter. Check carefully for gaps before proceeding.

Step 13 – Reseal the Headlight Lens

Inspect the original perimeter seal, warm it as required and carefully refit the clear lens to the main housing. Make sure the lens is fully seated all the way around and that the retaining clips engage correctly.

If the original sealing material is no longer sufficient, use suitable headlight sealing material to restore a complete weather-resistant seal.

Step 14 – Reinstall and Test the Headlight

Once the adhesive and sealant have cured sufficiently, refit the remaining bulbs, covers and components, excluding the sidelight module removed during the conversion.

Refit the headlight to the car, reconnect the remaining electrical connectors and reinstall the original fixings.

Before refitting the bumper, check:

  • Dipped beam operation
  • Main beam operation
  • Indicator operation
  • Rear clearance around the 80mm duct outlet

The sidelight on the modified headlight will no longer function.

Step 15 – Refit the Front Bumper

Once the headlight installation has been checked, reinstall the front bumper. Engage the bumper correctly at both sides before reinstalling the upper, lower and wheel-arch fixings. Confirm that the panel gaps around the lamp, wing and bumper remain correct.

Final Installation Checks

  • The scoop is secure and does not move.
  • The lens is fully seated around its complete perimeter.
  • The rear of the modified area is fully sealed.
  • The 80mm outlet has suitable clearance behind the headlight.
  • The remaining headlight functions operate correctly.
  • The loss of sidelight function on the modified lamp is understood.

After the first wash or exposure to wet weather, inspect the headlight for unusual condensation. Persistent moisture may indicate an area requiring additional sealing.

Common Installation Mistakes

Cutting too much material

Cut conservatively and repeatedly test-fit the scoop. Material can always be removed later; it cannot easily be put back.

Bonding before completing the full trial fit

Do not bond the duct until the complete lens, duct and housing assembly has been trial-fitted and the lamp closes correctly.

Poor sealing

Pay close attention to both the original lens perimeter and the newly modified area around the scoop. Poor sealing can lead to condensation inside the lamp.

Leaving cutting debris inside the lamp

Clean the headlight completely before resealing it.

Overheating the lens

Use controlled heat and work around the perimeter progressively. Excessive localised heat can distort the plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the headlight need to be removed?

Yes. The lamp needs to be removed from the car and the clear lens separated from the housing to carry out the conversion properly.

Do I need to cut the original headlight?

Yes. Installation requires permanent modification of the original headlight lens and internal structure.

Will the sidelight still work?

No. The original sidelight module is removed to create space for the duct, so sidelight functionality is lost on the modified headlight.

Is a cutting template supplied?

Yes. Use the supplied IPNG template to mark the initial opening, then finish the cut gradually while repeatedly trial-fitting the scoop.

What size is the outlet?

Both the EP3 and EP2 versions use an 80mm rear outlet.

Does this guide also apply to the EP2 version?

Yes. The fitting method is the same. The EP3 Type R version is installed in the left-hand headlight, while the EP2 version is installed in the right-hand headlight.

Can the headlight be returned to standard?

The modification should be considered permanent because the lens and internal headlight structure are cut and the sidelight module is removed. Returning the car to a fully standard headlight would require replacement of the modified parts or the complete lamp assembly.
