Honda Civic Type R EP3 Brake Cooling Duct Installation Guide

The facelift Honda Civic Type R EP3 provides useful front-bumper openings at the fog-light positions for a dedicated brake-cooling air feed. The IPNG Automotive brake-cooling air intake scoops (IP-0005) replace the original fog-lamp components, use the OEM Honda fixing locations and provide a 50mm outlet for flexible brake ducting.

This guide explains how to install the IPNG scoops on a 2003–2005 Civic Type R EP3 facelift and how to plan the ducting route toward the front brakes. Because suspension, wheel, brake and backing-plate configurations vary between cars, the wheel-side hose route should always be checked on the individual vehicle rather than copied blindly from another installation.

What the IPNG Brake-Cooling Scoops Do

The scoops occupy the original facelift fog-light positions and capture outside air from the front of the car. Each scoop incorporates a 90-degree 50mm outlet, allowing flexible hose to turn rearward behind the bumper rather than projecting directly into the front structure.

The scoops form the front air-entry point of a brake-cooling system. They do not by themselves determine where the air reaches the brake assembly. The effectiveness of the finished system depends on the hose route, how securely the hose is supported and the arrangement used at the wheel or brake end.

50mm flexible ducting is not included and is sold separately. No additional mounting hardware is required for the scoops themselves because they use the original Honda fog-lamp fixing locations.

Tools & Preparation

The following tools are normally sufficient for the scoop installation:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-blade screwdriver or, preferably, a plastic trim-clip removal tool
  • 8mm or 10mm socket/spanner as required by the existing fasteners
  • Suitable cable ties, P-clips or other secure hose supports for the ducting installation
  • Optional penetrating fluid for corroded original fasteners
  • Blanket, foam mat or clean protective surface on which to place the bumper

Before beginning, park the vehicle securely on level ground and allow the brakes and engine bay to cool. If access beneath the bumper or inside the wheel arches requires the vehicle to be raised, support it correctly using suitable axle stands at approved lifting points. Do not work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Step 1 – Remove the Front Bumper

Access to the original fog-lamp mounting locations is easiest with the front bumper removed. The EP3 bumper is retained by a combination of upper plastic clips, lower clips or fasteners and fasteners at the wheel-arch edges. Exact clip counts can vary with model specification and with replacement fasteners fitted during the car's life, so inspect the bumper before pulling on it.

  1. Open the bonnet and remove the plastic retaining clips along the upper bumper/grille area.
  2. Remove the lower bumper clips and any lower screws or bolts that still secure the bumper to the undertray/front structure.
  3. Turn the steering as required for access and remove the retaining screw or screws at each bumper-to-wheel-arch/fender edge.
  4. Check that no remaining clips or fasteners are holding the bumper before applying force.
  5. Carefully release each bumper corner from the wing/fender edge, then draw the bumper assembly forward.
  6. If the car still has working fog lamps, disconnect their electrical connectors before moving the bumper fully away from the vehicle.

The bumper is awkward rather than particularly heavy. Having a second person support the opposite side reduces the chance of scratching paint or allowing the bumper to fall forward as the last locating points release.

Step 2 – Remove the Original Fog-Lamp Components

With the bumper accessible, remove the original fog lamps or fog-lamp components from the facelift openings. Retain the original Honda mounting hardware because the IPNG scoops are designed around the OEM fog-lamp fixing locations.

Inspect the mounting points before installation. Repair damaged clips or severely corroded fasteners before fitting the new scoops so that the scoop is supported securely and sits correctly within the bumper opening.

Step 3 – Fit the IPNG Scoops

  1. Identify the left- and right-hand scoops and offer each one into its corresponding fog-light position.
  2. Check that the scoop face sits correctly in the bumper opening and that the 90-degree outlet points into a usable area behind the bumper.
  3. Install the scoop using the original Honda fog-lamp mounting locations and hardware.
  4. Tighten the fixings sufficiently to secure the part without overtightening them against the printed component or original plastic mounting features.
  5. Repeat on the opposite side.

No drilling, cutting, bonding or permanent bodywork modification should be required for the scoop installation when fitted to the stated facelift application.

Step 4 – Attach the 50mm Brake Ducting

Fit suitable 50mm internal-diameter flexible ducting over each scoop outlet and secure it so that it cannot pull free during driving. Avoid crushing the hose with an excessively tight clamp or cable tie, as reducing the hose cross-section restricts airflow.

Begin with more hose length than you think you need. It is easier to shorten the route after checking full steering and suspension clearance than to recover from a hose that has been cut too short.

Step 5 – Plan the Wheel-Side Hose Route

This is the most important part of the installation. The EP3 has limited space around the front wheel, driveshaft and suspension, and a route that appears clear with the wheels pointing straight ahead may contact the tyre or steering components at full lock.

Route each hose rearward from the bumper while keeping it away from:

  • the tyre and wheel throughout the full steering range
  • driveshafts and CV joints
  • steering arms and tie-rod ends
  • anti-roll-bar links and other moving suspension components
  • sharp edges that could cut through the ducting
  • hot exhaust or engine components
  • the original flexible brake hose and ABS wiring

Use several secure support points so the duct cannot sag into a moving component. Supports should hold the hose without flattening it and should allow for normal engine, steering and suspension movement.

Where Should the Ducting Finish?

The correct final outlet depends on the brake setup fitted to the car. On a purpose-designed brake-cooling installation, flexible ducting is commonly connected to a dedicated backing plate or air guide that directs the incoming air toward the brake disc. If your car uses such a plate, follow the plate manufacturer's instructions for its hose connection and final orientation.

If the vehicle does not use a dedicated backing plate, the hose still needs to be positioned securely so that useful airflow reaches the brake area without contacting the disc, caliper, wheel, brake hose or suspension. Do not attach ducting to brake hoses or use the duct as a support for any brake component.

The IPNG scoop kit does not include wheel-side backing plates, duct hose or brake hardware, and this guide does not require modification of the hydraulic braking system.

Step 6 – Full-Lock & Clearance Check

Before refitting the bumper permanently, perform a careful clearance check on both sides:

  1. Secure the hose in its intended position.
  2. Turn the steering from full left lock to full right lock slowly.
  3. Watch the hose near the tyre, driveshaft, steering and suspension components throughout the movement.
  4. Check that the hose does not become stretched, pinched or pulled off the scoop outlet.
  5. Where practical, consider how suspension compression will change the relative position of the wheel and hose.
  6. Re-route or shorten the ducting if any point of contact is possible.

Repeat this check after the first short drive because flexible ducting can settle into a slightly different position once exposed to airflow and vehicle movement.

Step 7 – Refit the Front Bumper

Once both scoops and hoses are secure, refit the bumper in the reverse order of removal. Guide the bumper corners into position carefully and make sure the new ducting is not trapped between the bumper and bodywork.

Reinstall the wheel-arch fasteners, lower fixings and upper clips. Replace broken or missing trim clips rather than relying on neighbouring fasteners to hold the bumper in place.

Final Installation Checklist

  • Both IPNG scoops are secure in the OEM fog-light mounting locations.
  • 50mm hoses are positively secured to both 90-degree outlets.
  • No hose is crushed or sharply kinked.
  • Neither hose contacts the tyre at full left or right steering lock.
  • Hoses are clear of driveshafts, steering and suspension components.
  • Brake hoses and ABS wiring remain untouched and unrestricted.
  • Wheel-side duct outlets or backing-plate connections are secure.
  • The bumper is correctly located and all original fasteners are refitted.

Common Installation Mistakes

Routing the hose with the wheels straight only

This can hide a clearance problem. Always check both full steering locks before driving.

Using excessively tight bends

Flexible ducting can collapse internally when forced around a small radius. Use the smoothest route available and avoid unnecessary changes of direction.

Leaving long unsupported hose sections

Unsupported ducting can move significantly at speed and may migrate toward the tyre or driveshaft. Secure the hose at sensible intervals.

Assuming every EP3 has the same wheel-side layout

Aftermarket wheels, brake kits, coilovers, ride height and backing plates can all change the available clearance. Treat the final wheel-side routing as vehicle-specific.

Brake Cooling & Track Use

Repeated hard braking can place considerable thermal load into the front braking system. The purpose of the IPNG scoops is to provide a clean supply of outside air that can be ducted toward the front brakes during sustained or demanding use.

They should be considered one part of the overall brake setup rather than a substitute for suitable pads, fluid, discs, maintenance or correct driving technique. If you are experiencing braking faults, fluid loss, damaged hoses, unusual pedal behaviour or other safety-critical symptoms, diagnose and repair those issues before track or road use.
